COL6A3

The COL6A3 gene encodes for the alpha-3 chain of type VI collagen, a protein essential for the extracellular matrix structure. Known as alpha-3 procollagen, it is also referred to as COL6A3. This protein plays a crucial role in collagen chain trimerization and integrin pathway, contributing to cell adhesion and matrix assembly. COL6A3 mutations are associated with Bethlem myopathy and Ullrich congenital muscular dystrophy, which are characterized by muscle weakness and degeneration. In terms of drug development, research is ongoing to identify COL6A3 inhibitors for therapeutic intervention in these diseases.
