FOXP3

FOXP3 encodes the forkhead box P3 protein, also commonly known as scurfin. This protein serves as a crucial transcription factor that plays a vital role in the development and function of regulatory T - cells (Tregs). It acts by binding to specific DNA sequences and modulating the expression of genes involved in immune responses. FOXP3 is mainly involved in the transforming growth factor - beta (TGF - β) signaling pathway.
Defects in the FOXP3 gene are linked to immune - related diseases such as immune dysregulation, polyendocrinopathy, enteropathy, X - linked (IPEX) syndrome. In drug development, efforts are underway to target FOXP3 - related pathways. Some experimental therapies aim to enhance or suppress FOXP3 activity, with the hope of treating various autoimmune and inflammatory conditions.
