HMOX1

HMOX1, heme oxygenase 1, alias HO-1, HSP32, HMOX1D, bK286B10. HMOX1 is an important enzyme in heme metabolism, converting heme to biliverdin, which is subsequently reduced to bilirubin and carbon monoxide.
HMOX1 has multiple biological effects, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, signaling, and immunomodulatory effects, which are important for protecting cells from oxidative and inflammatory damage and maintaining cellular homeostasis. HMOX1 expression can be upregulated after exposure to oxidative stress and cellular injury, while Nrf2 can also directly regulate HO-1 promoter activity. The activity of HMOX1 is induced by its substrate heme and various non-heme substances, and the robust adaptive response to multiple stimuli reveals its potentially important role in blocking inflammatory processes and oxidative tissue damage.
