L3T4, also known as the CD4 molecule, is a crucial receptor on the surface of T lymphocytes that plays a pivotal role in T cell development, activation, and immune response. Structurally, L3T4 consists of an extracellular region, a transmembrane region, and an intracellular region, allowing it to specifically bind to major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II molecules, which is crucial for T cells to recognize antigens. In terms of signaling pathways, when L3T4 binds to MHC class II molecules, it triggers the activation of a series of signaling pathways, including tyrosine kinase pathways, phospholipase C pathways, and calcium ion pathways. These activated pathways promote T cell proliferation, differentiation, and effector function.
