Nucleolin is the major nucleolar protein of growing eukaryotic cells. It is found associated with intranucleolar chromatin and pre-ribosomal particles. It induces chromatin decondensation by binding to histone H1. It is thought to play a role in pre-rRNA transcription and ribosome assembly.

Depletion of endogenous NCL in cells by siRNA targeting during H5N1 infection resulted in significantly increased viral polymerase activity. PMID:29974255
The function of nucleolin in ribosomal synthesis could account for its effect on cell division and survival, but this vital role does not seem to be linked to sequence-specific RNA binding. PMID:18637790
