F11

The F11 gene encodes coagulation factor XI, also commonly known as plasma thromboplastin antecedent. This protein plays a crucial role in the intrinsic pathway of blood coagulation. It is activated by factor XIIa and then activates factor IX, which in turn leads to the formation of a fibrin clot.

Mutations in the F11 gene can result in factor XI deficiency, a rare bleeding disorder. In terms of drug development, there is ongoing research on novel anticoagulants that target factor XI. These drugs aim to reduce the risk of thrombosis while minimizing the bleeding side - effects associated with traditional anticoagulants.
