IFIH1

The IFIH1 gene encodes the interferon-induced helicase C domain-containing protein 1, also known as melanoma differentiation-associated protein 5 (MDA5). This protein is a key component of the innate immune system. It senses viral double - stranded RNA, activating signaling cascades that lead to the production of type I interferons. The RIG - I - like receptor signaling pathway is closely related to its function.
Mutations in IFIH1 are associated with various autoimmune diseases, such as Aicardi - Goutières syndrome and Singleton - Merten syndrome.
