MFGE8

MFGE8, also known as Milk fat globule-EGF factor 8 protein, is a peripheral membrane glycoprotein with diverse functions. It plays a crucial role in the phagocytosis of apoptotic cells, facilitating their clearance by macrophages. MFGE8 interacts with phosphatidylserine on the surface of apoptotic cells and integrins on macrophages, triggering signal transduction pathways that enhance phagocytosis. This protein is involved in inflammatory responses and inflammatory/autoimmune diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis. Research on MFGE8 has led to potential therapeutic strategies, including the development of inhibitors and drugs targeting the protein to modulate its function in these diseases.
